India – 75 Years of Independence

15 August is a very significant day for India as we gained Independence from the rule of the British in 1947. Since then, the 15th of August of every year celebrated as Independence Day of India to commemorate its freedom from the 200-year-old British government. At midnight on 15 August 1947, the British rulers handed the country back to its Indian leaders, ending a remarkable struggle that lasted years. It was the 15th of August 1947, the historic date when sovereign India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru unfolded the tricolor flag of the nation from the glorious Red Fort.

History of India

Indian freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, etc started many movements that in some ways of others helped broke the shackles of slavery after 90 years. From the Revolt of 1857 to the sepoy mutiny, there were many movements that were major benchmarks in the fight against Britishers. We owe this freedom to our valiant freedom fighters who didn’t hesitate for once to give up their lives, just so their future generations can breathe the free air in India.

Lord Mountbatten had been given the mandate by the British parliament to transfer the power by June 1948. Watching the impatience of the people, Mountbatten knew, that if he waited till June 1948, In C Rajagopalachari’s memorable words, there would have been no power left to transfer, that is the reason he advanced date to August 1947.

It was not at all easy for Britishers to give up power and accept the defeat, so they camouflaged it in the name of stopping the bloodshed. Mountbatten claimed that by advancing the date, he was ensuring that there will be no bloodshed or riot. Although he was proven wrong later. He tried to justify himself by saying, “wherever colonial rule has ended there will be no bloodshed. That is the price you pay.”

The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and passed within 15 days. On 15 august 1947, The British rule over India ended and marked history.

On August 15 (Independence Day), the tricolor is tied and sits at bottom of the pole. The Prime Minister then raises (pulls) it up and hoists it with the aim to honor the historical event of the day.                                                                                                                                                                                                      On the other hand, when the tricolor is to be unfurled on 26 January, the flag remains closed and tied up at the top of the pole.
